A Truly Sparkling Work

Birthdays always meant cake and sparklers. Whilst cake was very appealing, my favourite part involved the latter. I would beg for an extra sparkler and go stand outside in the dark and paint my name with the sparkler in the air as many times as I could before it burnt out. I knew this was a ‘cool’ idea and was thankfully reminded of this by Ryan Enn Hughes. This talented artist captured my eye with his latest project named Sparkler$. This project takes my childhood memory and produces a unique and creative idea. It involves four subjects jumping up and down whilst painting with sparklers. Capturing these photographs using a DSLR camera set to an eight-second exposure, the images are then sequenced to create animated GIFs. Photographed in complete darkness with the only light source being the sparkler, the Sparkler$ project is vibrant and captivating and illustrates that this artist has given a future to moving pictures. Ryan who is a Photographer and Motion Picture Director based in Toronto stated ‘I want to do more than just make a still image’.

Whilst I may try to take claim of the idea of his latest project, I could not compete with his talent. Ryan has worked for many clients including Colenso BBDO, Canada’s National Ballet School, The New York Times, and Facebook. Hardly an amateur at creating motion pictures, he has a number of clips that blur motion picture and still photography. One of these former projects, The 360 Project depicts a single moment captured simultaneously in 360 degrees by 48 cameras aligned in a circle. The Krump 360 and Ballet 360 projects are clips of dancers performing different moves within their dancing style. Again photographed in darkness, the bright coloured clothing of the subject creates contrast and mesmerises the viewer with the precision and pop of their moves. Beyond making me wish I had some dancing ability, these clips are fresh, funky and engaging.

Ryan’s work isn’t short of recognition; he has been published in the Atlantic, The British Journal of Photography, The Guardian, Wired, The Huffington Post, NPR, PDN Magazine, Creative Review, Resource Magazine, and Applied Arts Magazine. His art work is plentiful and will satisfy anyone’s palate; you can enjoy all of his work including motion, gifs and photos at http://www.ryanennhughes.com. Even more interesting and worth a visit is his blog http://ryanennhughes.com/blog

The Government Art Collection is one of the most important collections of British art, with 13,500 works dating from the 16th century to the present day displayed in 420 government buildings worldwide.

This display, a key part of the London 2012 Festival, marks 60 years of commissioning for the Government Art Collection and unveils a new work inspired by the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Works in the exhibition, many being shown for the first time in a public gallery, date from 1949 to the present day. Highlights include L. S. Lowry’s painting of Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation procession in 1953 and John Piper’s city scenes for the British Embassy in Rio de Janeiro in 1949. Catherine Yass’ colour transparencies of the British Embassy in Paris in the day and evening light (1999) will be on display, as well as a pen and ink drawing by Donald Urquhart featuring an A to Z guide to Los Angeles (2010).

Government Art Collection: Commissions: Now and Then (21 June – 2 September 2012) in Gallery 7 is part of the Whitechapel Gallery’s on-going programme opening up important public and private collections for everyone and is the final of a series of five displays exploring the diverse nature of the Government Art Collection and its role promoting British culture on the world stage.

Shown alongside this is The Story of the Government Art Collection (Until 2 September 2012) in the Pat Matthews Gallery (Gallery 4), displays the Collection’s archives for the first time. Rare documents include papers detailing the loan of Winston Churchill’s bust to the Oval Office in Washington from 2001 – 2008, and records of paintings hung in 10 Downing Street under Prime Ministers from the Duke of Wellington to John Major. A 1962 document records artist William Coldstream’s proposal that the Whitechapel Gallery hold an exhibition of the Collection, while a World War II photograph shows the bomb damage to the State Rooms of 10 Downing Street.

For 113 years, the Government Art Collection has acquired paintings, sculptures and work in other media dating from the 16th century to the present day. On display in government buildings worldwide, their purpose is to promote British art and artists.

Met Gala 2012 Outfits

The Metropolitan Museum Of Art's annual Gala took place last night and as usual lived up to all the hype. As usual all eyes were on the leading ladies in fashion to deliver. Sadly very few did.

According to most analysts, Beyonce stole the show with her "absolutely stunning" Givenchy outfit. You have to see it close up to appreciate how much work went into it as the picture below fails to do it much justice. Saying that, I personally do not share their enthusiasm and excitement for that outfit; It looks more or less like an over the top Las Vegas showgirl outfit. She did look absolutely beautiful and in good shape and health which made up for the dress choice.

There were very few fashion successes of the night. The only wow's were for shocking attires like Emma Stone's red school prom dress and Kristen stewart's overly casual and terrible combo of multi-coloured leatherish skirt and a xena the warrior princess style strapless top... ohhh actually i have been informed by Balenciaga that it is a dress after all. Lovely look for a night out clubbing with R Patz and certainly NOT for the Met Gala.

Rihanna played it safe with her uber sexy Tom Ford leather number. Rosie Huntington-Whiteley followed RiRi's lead and played it safe with her Burberry number too. Caped crusader Lana Del Rey donned the French designer Joseph Altuzarra's dress which she claimed was the "embodiment of her music". Well i'll let you be the judge of that. As for Kisten Dunst, well whoever suggested THAT outfit to her clearly misunderstood the event.
Anyway here are some of the outfits with my caption.

Design Of The Year 2012

British design studio Barber Osgerby have won the Design of the Year 2012 for their stunning design of the London 2012 Olympic Torch. The overall winner was chosen from 89 entries to claim the winning title. The award, designed by Swarovski was presented at the awards ceremony held at the Design Museum.
The London 2012 Olympic Torch is not only a beautiful symbol of the Olympic Games but it also meets a demanding design brief. The aluminium made torch will be carried over 8,000 miles and is perforated with 8,000 circular holes, each representing a bearer who will run with the torch. Aside from being decorative, the holes also act to reduce the weight of the torch and prevent heat from the flame being conducted to the bearer’s hand.
Deyan Sudjic Director of the Design Museum said of the winning entry ‘Nothing is harder to get right than designing for the Olympics. The lightness and simplicity of Barber Osgerby’s London 2012 Olympic Torch does just that. The torch not only captures the spirit of London as Olympic host city but also demonstrates how design can celebrate traditional ideas in a modern way’.
Sebastian Coe, Chair of LOCOG, added: ‘The Torch is one of the most recognisable symbols of the Olympic Games and we are thrilled that our design has won this prestigious title. I am delighted we have such a brilliantly designed, engineered and crafted Torch that will help to celebrate the amazing personal achievements of each of our 8,000 Torchbearers and give them their moment to shine. It is also fantastic news that the stunning architecture of the London 2012 Velodrome has won an award and welcome recognition of the landmark new buildings the Games are bringing to London.’

Outstanding Achievement As Sukhothai Wins Gold

issue 1.jpg

Historic Sukhothai's Golden Age continues with two Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) Gold Awards 2012 for tourist attractions which celebrate the traditions of this north central province and incorporate interactive activities in uniquely interesting tourist attraction projects for visitors to the region.

A Gold Award 2012 for Heritage and Culture has been given to Na Ton Chan Community. Villagers keep traditional natural cotton dyeing methods going whilst also running a successful homestay program, so that visitors from all over the world can experience the real Thai country lifestyle, from weaving, to cooking Thai classic dishes, and soaking up the atmosphere of this unique community and village life as they amble through what might seem like a different age.

Sukhothai is also a winner in the Environment-Ecotourism category too with its interesting Organic Agriculture Project at Sukhothai Airport. The owner of Bangkok Airways designated some of the unutilized airport land to create a working farm that supplies rice, fruit and vegetables grown organically without any pesticides or chemicals. Visitors can experience the life of rice farmers by working alongside them in the paddy fields, as part of a scheme which includes riding and harnessing buffalo in the fields and learning about organic farming. The idea behind the project was to promote nature and health in Thailand. The project gives back to nature and creates a working example in sustainable farming and involved, interactive tourism.

Sukhothai's two Gold Awards 2012 emphasize the importance of experience tourism, where visitors to Thailand can totally immerse themselves in a country lifestyle, whilst learning about the culture and the history of the country from firsthand experience. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is certainly proud of the PATA accolades.

"Winning these two Gold Awards is tremendous recognition of the TAT's focus on encouraging more environmentally-responsible tourism and the development of community-based tourism that allows visitors to experience Thai culture up close while providing direct benefits to communities in Thailand," says TAT Governor Suraphon Svetasreni.

Sukhothai's rich history as an independent Thai kingdom in the 13th century has ensured it is firmly on the tourist trail for those seeking the cultural highlights of Thailand. The old town with the Sukhothai Historical Park, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The whole region is renowned as an agricultural area where traditional arts and skills still exist. It is a part of Thailand that some visitors only get to glimpse if they are lucky, whereas sustainable projects that involve visitors in a positive way, for the benefit of individual programs, those people whose livelihoods depend on them, and Thai tourism, are worthy of recognition.

PATA Gold Awards set industry standards for excellence and innovation and are judged by tourism experts. The Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) is a non-profit membership association that acts as a catalyst for the responsible development of travel and tourism within the Asia Pacific region. Na Ton Chan Community and the Organic Agriculture Project are clear examples of tourism that welcomes visitors whilst respecting and integrating with the land, culture and lifestyles found in this beautiful part of Thailand.

Four Diamond Swissotel $10 Million Refurbishment

After construction begun in December 2011, The Four Diamond Swissôtel Chicago has completed the $10 million renovation of its lobby/bar and classic meeting space.
Inspired by the work of the building’s original architect, Harry Weese, Swissôtel Chicago’s renovated lobby has been transformed into a welcoming oasis for guests. The lobby now features a modern design with natural elements and an earth tone palette that reflect the hotel’s Swiss heritage. This natural feel is set off by attention grabbing splashes of color, dramatic art, and lighting elements like the artistic rainstorm created by thousands of dangling glass bubble fixtures. Backlit glass panels, etched with Chicago’s skyline, sit just behind the check-in area. Projected just about the bar area, Swissôtel Chicago’s Swiss Circle, by award-winning artist Jork André Dieter, changes color to reflect various moods throughout the day.  This illuminated work features two rings of Chicago landmarks and historic elements like Solider Field and Cloud Gate, while the center shows off Chicago’s skyline and Lake Michigan.
Located in the lobby, Amuse is the hotel’s latest food and beverage concept offering seasonal small and shareable plate options with signature cocktails and wine pairings for each. Amuse appeals to all five senses with its aromatic and flavorful menu, DJ-style music to fit the mood and seating in an artistic, eye-engaging setting.
Check-in pods replaced the traditional bulky hotel front desk, affording a more welcoming experience for the guest upon arrival. Front desk agents will now work from laptop computers, giving them the flexibility to interact with guests even when they are away from their pod. The concierge will be armed with tablets for quick access to all necessary information a guest may need to know, and a Nervana Ghost Wall will act as a digital concierge for guests to check weather, map local routes, and research area attractions.
Swissôtel Chicago will be the first property to provide meeting planners and attendees with Nervana’s Bonfire Events Management app. This application tracks schedules, flights, and presentations, connects guests via a social site and sends alerts for any changes in scheduling. Meeting planners can use this technology in the newly renovated classic meeting space that’s been transformed to mimic the modern, monochromatic feel of the hotel’s 38,000 square foot Event Centre that opened in 2009.

Jeremiah Weed Hits The Shores

Jeremiah Weed Root Brew & Sour Mash Bottle and Serve.jpg

Why am i seeing Jeremiah Weed everywhere i asked myself after seeing it being advertised in a Walkabout bar in Shepherds Bush and subsequently in a Waitrose nearby. I decided to get my 2 female friends to try it out as i was sadly the non drinker of the bunch and they did remark at how very different and unique it tasted and they certainly would consider ordering it again.

According to the Jeremiah Weed team, "it is inspired by the timeless authenticity of the heartland of America, new Jeremiah Weed Brews are a refreshing tasting alternative to beer or cider."

What is a ‘brew’ you might ask?  Well, it’s nothing fancy, just a mish mash of great tasting ingredients thrown together to create a delicious drink that’s best shared with friends.  In the case of Jeremiah Weed, they’ve added a hint of ginger to get Jeremiah Weed Root Brew and a touch of bourbon flavour to create Jeremiah Weed Sour Mash Brew.

To fully appreciate the subtle flavours of Jeremiah Weed Brews, fill a jam jar full of ice, pour your brew and enjoy – that’s the Jeremiah Weed way.

Jeremiah Weed Root Brew and Sour Mash Brew are available in pubs and bars across the country and stocked in Asda, Waitrose and other good retailers, RRSP: £2.20 (4% ABV).

Train Journey With A Difference - That's 'Entertrainment'

Unsuspecting London commuters treated to Shakespeare and Improv Comedy
  • World’s first play on train to mark opening of Blackfriars south station
  • First station new station on the Southbank in London for 120yrs
  • Collaboration with Network Rail and Shakespeare’s Globe
  • Performances by award winning Two Gents Productions and Abandoman

Hundreds of unsuspecting commuters heading into Blackfriars today will find themselves entertained by acts of Shakespearian comedy being performed live on trains on the Thameslink route.
Coined ‘entertrainment’, the activity, which has been organised by Network Rail and is taking place in train carriages running into and out of Blackfriars, will see passengers treated to short acts from the Shakespeare play Two Gentleman of Verona.
It is being performed by the award winning Two Gents Productions, as part of a collaboration between Network Rail and Shakespeare’s Globe to mark the opening of Blackfriars south station, the first new station to be built in this part of London for 120 years.
In what will be the first play to take place on a train, each scene will last for an average of 2-4minutes. The scenes have been specially adapted from their forthcoming shows at the Globe to Globe Festival to fit between the train station stops along the Thameslink route. In a twist likely to further bemuse commuters, the scenes are to be acted out in a combination of Shona and English by the London based duo.
With thousands of passengers expected to travel into Blackfriars today, hundreds of commuters are set to be kept entertained on their train journeys.
Laurence Whitbourn, Network Rail project director, Blackfriars, comments, “The opening of the south station has made Blackfriars a cultural gateway, bringing people on the Thameslink route within easy reach of some of the very best culture that London has to offer. We wanted to make the daily grind of the commute a bit more fun and demonstrate the kind of entertainment that is now directly accessible from Blackfriars.”
Those commuters alighting at Blackfriars South platform are set for a further surprise, when they will be serenaded by hip hop comedy duo, Abandoman, performing under the guise of First Capital Connect station staff. The award winning comedians are currently performing at the E4 Udderbelly Festival at Southbank Centre, a short distance from the station itself and will be greeting unsuspecting passengers with impromptu Shakespeare-inspired and improvised rap.
Alan Bishop, co-chair of the South Bank and Bankside Cultural Quarter and Chief Executive of Southbank Centre, comments: “It’s fantastic that there is a new key direct transport link from Brighton to Bedford to the South Bank and Bankside Cultural Quarter, the largest concentration of culture anywhere in the world, which attracts more than 22 million people promenading along the south of the river each year. Next Monday, Shakespeare would have celebrated his 448th birthday, so these performances are a fitting tribute to a man who found his feet performing within the immediate vicinity of Blackfriars.”
Neil Constable, Chief Executive of Shakespeare’s Globe, comments: “We are delighted to be working with Network Rail to raise the profile of Blackfriars South Station and the quick and easy access it offers to Bankside’s cultural heart. We look forward to welcoming more and more people to Shakespeare’s Globe, and especially to our ground-breaking Globe to Globe Festival which begins at the weekend.”
Blackfriars has been completely rebuilt by Network Rail to make way for longer trains and more frequent services on the Thameslink route from Bedford to Brighton, through central London. Over 150,000 passengers are expected to use Blackfriars south station during summer 2012.
Brighton resident and commuter, Charlotte Frost, 24, comments: “I stopped to check my train time when station staff approached me asking me if I needed help. I didn’t realise it was Abandoman – they improvised a brilliant song for me on the spot. Great commute to work in this morning!”
